2.4 In this module you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of cost terms and their application in the aviation industry.  For this Case Study complete the four requirements below: ABC Airlines has determined both the fixed and variable costs per flying hour associated with flying each of the 10 different types of aircraft in their fleet. How might this type of information be useful in determining the costs associated with flying different aircraft on specific routes? You are a management analyst for XYZ aircraft manufacturing company. Your company is considering either to purchase or lease manufacturing equipment. Identify, discuss, and be specific on five differential costs that might exist between the two options. You can develop any assumptions you want for either alternative, but if you do, they should be explained. List and discuss three costs that are likely to be controllable by a city’s airport manager. List three costs that are likely to be uncontrollable by the manager. Refer to Problem 2-43 at the end of Chapter 2. Build or use an existing Excel Spreadsheet and complete requirements 1 and 2. The spreadsheet must accompany the submission. For this case study, you will demonstrate your ability to correctly calculate the problem and demonstrate creative thinking by analyzing the case and answering the questions that are intended to interpret the data. Please refer to the case study section of the syllabus for additional guidance and your Case Study Rubric to review the criteria that will be used to evaluate and grade your submission. This activity is due the last day of this module. If you have chosen to complete this activity as a group assignment (optional), one member of the group will submit the assignment. Include the names of all participating group members in the top left corner of the first page of the document. 4.4 In this module you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of mixed costs and their application in the aviation industry.  For this Case Study, complete the three requirements below: ABC Airlines has calculated the total costs (fixed and variable) for the passenger service flights between Los Angeles, California and Orlando, Florida. The two methods used were the high-low method and the least squared method. Compare and contrast these two methods. Which one is the most reliable? What affect does an outlier have on the high-low method? Which method would you recommend to ABC? List and discuss ten possible cost drivers for an aircraft manufacturing firm. Refer to Case 6-46 at the end of Chapter 6. Compute requirement 2, except you can build or use an existing Excel Spreadsheet to calculate the fixed and variable costs of the airport’s cost behavior pattern. Also, complete requirement 4. The spreadsheet must accompany the submission. For this case study, you will demonstrate your ability to correctly calculate the problem and demonstrate creative thinking by analyzing the case and answering the questions that are intended to interpret the data Please refer to the case study section of the syllabus for additional guidance and your Case Study Rubric to review the criteria that will be used to evaluate and grade your submission. This activity is due the last day of this module. If you have chosen to complete this activity as a group assignment (optional), one member of the group will submit the assignment. Include the names of all participating group members in the top left corner of the first page of the document. 5.3 In this module you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of cost, volume, profit, and their application in the aviation industry. For this Case Study complete the four requirements below:   ABC Passenger Service Airlines has determined the breakeven point, both in dollars and passengers, necessary to breakeven. Explain how an increase or decrease of passengers from the breakeven point would affect the profit or loss of the firm. You are a management analyst for XYZ aircraft manufacturing company. Your company currently manufactures and sells four different types of aircraft. Historically, each aircraft type constitutes 25% of the total revenue. For each aircraft type the unit contribution margin, expressed as a per cent of sales, is different. If this year the sales mix is different than the historical average, explain what affect this would have on the breakeven point? Two companies have the same fixed expenses, unit variable expense, and profits. However, one company sells its products for a lower price. Explain what might be the reason(s) they do this? Refer to Problem 7-42 at the end of Chapter 7. Build or use an existing Excel Spreadsheet and complete requirements 1 and 3. 6.4 In this module you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of Absorption and Variable Closing and their application in the aviation industry.  For this Case Study complete the three requirements below: A supplier of aircraft parts to an aircraft manufacturer has noticed an increase in inventory. As a result of this, will absorption costing or variable costing income be greater for the supplier? Explain why? You are a management analyst for XYZ aircraft manufacturing company. Your company is considering either to use absorption costing or variable costing for internal financial analysis. Which method would you recommend and why would you recommend it? Refer to Case 8-43 at the end of Chapter 8. Build or use an existing Excel Spreadsheet and complete requirements 2, 3, and 4. Comment on the results obtained from requirements 2, 3, and 4. 7.3 In this activity, you will solve a case out of your textbook, Managerial Accounting. The intent of the Case Studies is to show how to analyze module related managerial accounting financial data in an organizations setting. For this case study, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to correctly calculate some components of a master budget. Your fifth Case Study will be Case 9-42: Comprehensive Master Budget, Borrowing, Acquisition of Automated Material-Handling System. This case can be found at the end of Chapter 9. The primary focus of this case study is to develop a comprehensive master budget. Your assignment is to complete four requirements identified for Case 9-42:1. Sales Budget, 2. Cash Receipts Budget, 3. Purchases Budget, and 4. Cash Disbursement Budget. There is no rubric for this case study, as it is all math and requires no narrative. This activity is due the last day of this module. If you have chosen to complete this activity as a group assignment (optional), one member of the group will submit the assignment. Include the names of all participating group members in the top left corner of the first page of the document. 8.3 In this module, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of a capital budget. The principles of capital budgeting are applicable to all industries. Refer to Case Study 16-58, Capital-Budgeting Analysis of Automated-Material-Handling System, at the end of Chapter 16. Build or use an existing Excel Spreadsheet and complete requirements 1, 2, and 3.
